Where To Use A Oyster Card
You can use an Oyster card to travel on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and most TfL Rail services in London.
If you live in London, you may be able to get a discounted travelcard called an Oyster photocard.
To get an Oyster card, you can:
- buy one online from the TfL website
- buy one at a Tube station ticket machine
- buy one at a London Overground station ticket office
- some newsagents and convenience stores
Oyster cards are free but you need to pay a £5 refundable deposit. You can top up your Oyster card with pay as you go credit or add a travelcard or bus & tram pass.
If you're visiting London, you can also get a Visitor Oyster card. This is a pay as you go Oyster card with a £3 refundable deposit and comes with some added extras, like discounts at some attractions.
Where To Use A Oyster Card
You can use your Oyster card on the following transport services:
- London Underground
- London Overground
- Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
- Trams
- Buses
- Some National Rail services in Lond
When you touch in and out on bus, Tube, tram, DLR or London Overground services, your fare is automatically calculated. You can also use your Oyster card to pay for some car parking, river boat services and cycle hire.
Pay As You Go Oyster Cards
If you're using Oyster pay as you go, you need to keep enough credit on your card to cover your journey. If you don't, you may be charged a penalty fare.
Where Is My Oyster Card Not Allowed
Oyster cards are not accepted on the following transport services:
- Heathrow Express
- Stansted Express
- Gatwick Express
- London Midland services between Euston and Watford Junction
- Southern services between London Bridge and East Croydon or Clapham Junction
You can use contactless payment instead of Oyster on these services.
When you use Oyster pay as you go, the cost of your journey is deducted from the credit on your card. Daily and weekly price caps apply to Oyster pay as you go, so you never pay more than the cost of a daily or weekly travelcard.
If you're using an Oyster card with a travelcard or bus & tram pass, you need to touch in and out on a yellow card reader every time you start or end your journey. You may be charged a penalty fare if you forget to touch in or out.
How To Check A Oyster Card Balance
You can check your Oyster card balance and recent journeys online or at a Tube station ticket machine. You can also top up your Oyster card online or at a Tube station ticket machine.
What To Do If You Lose A Oyster Card

You can also get a refund for any credit on your Oyster card. To do this, you need to take your Oyster card to a London Underground ticket office. You will need to pay a £3 processing fee and any remaining credit on your Oyster card will be refunded to you.
